BX1 - Get the Shot & Protect Your Intellectual Property

by Jean-Michel Casanova

Those ice Climbing tools were the Prizes of our last-year Photo-contest

About a year ago, I had the chance to snap of some slackline shots to "pitch" a series of segments to NBC Network. An opportunity I wanted to create to promote buildering, climbing, slack-lining, and all kind of rather daring (yet intelligent) things kids and grown-up kids can do in big cities like "Hell A."

This photo of my buddy, Andy Chen, wearing a Hero3 wrist camera, was taken at 7:45 AM above Topanga Canyon, Los Angeles, California. But here's a "behind the scene" little story you might actually learn something from...

After offering Andy and my assistant a few shots for personal use and other promo purposes, I specifically told them to absolutely not post any of those on their or any website, suspecting that such an original concept would immediatly be copied... Two months later, a "colleague" was winning a photo contest in some cheap magazine, by using that exact same spot and photographic angle.

Bottom line, you should always protect your intellectual property, never let the media make you do crazy things or steal your soul, and never attempt to do this at home or without the proper equipment and professional instruction !
